Whirlpool / Maytag / Amana top-freezer refrigerator (WRT series): field service manual

Covers: Whirlpool-built top-mount refrigerators sold under the WRT and similar series and their sister badges: older units with a mechanical defrost timer, and later units with an adaptive defrost control (ADC) board. Dial or slider controls, single evaporator in the freezer.

Single sourceBrands: Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Roper9 components

The classic single-evaporator top-freezer. All cooling happens on one coil behind the freezer back panel. The freezer feeds the fresh-food section through an adjustable air control. These units are simple, cheap to fix and common in rentals, which makes them a frequent call for property techs. Most no-cool calls are defrost failures, a stalled evaporator fan or a dirty condenser. The sealed system is rarely the cause.

Safety first

  • Unplug the unit before removing panels.
  • Live tests at the timer, board or cold control are caution work. Keep one hand clear and use insulated probes.
  • Never chip ice off the evaporator with a sharp tool. A punctured coil is a sealed-system repair.
  • Sealed-system work (compressor replacement, leaks, recharge) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

The compressor, condenser and condenser fan sit in the machine compartment at the bottom rear, behind a rear access cover and the front kick plate. The evaporator and its fan are behind the freezer back panel. The fan pulls air across the coil and blows it into the freezer. Part of that air is pushed down a duct into the fresh-food section.

There are two controls. The temperature control (a cold control/thermostat in the fresh-food section) starts and stops the compressor. The airflow control on the freezer back wall is a manual damper that splits cold air between the freezer and the fresh-food section. Whirlpool's guidance is to leave the airflow control on its Recommended mark. Change the temperature control one step at a time and wait 24 hours before rechecking. Some models have a garage-ready airflow setting meant for rooms around 38-55°F.

Defrost: on older units a mechanical timer counts compressor run time and switches power from the compressor to the defrost heater at intervals. Later units replace the timer with an adaptive defrost control board. The board counts run time (and on some boards adjusts the interval based on how long the last defrost took). In both cases a bimetal defrost thermostat clipped to the evaporator must be cold (closed) for the heater to get power. It opens once the coil warms above freezing.

Normal behavior: Whirlpool says these refrigerators typically run 40-80% of the time at average room temperature, and longer in warm rooms. Allow 24 hours after installation to reach temperature. Whirlpool rates indoor use only, in rooms between 55°F and 110°F (13-43°C).
