Chain, belt and screw drive (trolley) garage door openers: field service manual
Covers: Ceiling-mounted rail openers with a trolley/carriage (chain, belt or screw drive), AC or DC motors, LiftMaster Security+ 2.0/myQ, Genie Intellicode, Overhead Door Odyssey/Destiny. Own summary; model families only.
A powerhead on the ceiling drives a chain, belt or threaded screw along a rail; a trolley linked to the door by an arm pulls it open and closed. The opener only moves the door; the springs carry its weight. Newer units use a logic board with travel/RPM sensing instead of mechanical limit switches.
Safety first
- Torsion and extension springs, lift cables, drums and bottom brackets store dangerous energy: never adjust, loosen set screws or unwind; refer to a trained door technician.
- Never bypass the safety-reversing sensors.
- Never increase force to make a binding door work.
- Unplug and disconnect the battery before opening the powerhead.
How it works
A command from the wall control, remote, keypad or app reaches the logic/receiver board, which runs the motor in the chosen direction.
Travel is tracked by an RPM/travel sensor (interrupter on the motor shaft or travel module) on LiftMaster, or by limit programming on Genie/Overhead Door; the board stops at the programmed limits.
Force sensing watches for extra load. On closing, extra load or a broken sensor beam makes the door reverse.
The safety-reversing photo-eyes, mounted low beside the door, must see each other before a remote-initiated close is allowed.
An emergency release on the trolley disconnects the door for manual operation.
