Samsung front-load washer: field service manual
Covers: WF-series front-loaders with digital display and direct-drive BLDC motor, roughly 2010 onward (series names only; check the model label inside the door frame).
Samsung WF washers hang a horizontal drum in a plastic tub on springs and friction dampers, turned by a brushless direct-drive motor bolted to the back of the tub. A main control board runs the cycle and drives the motor through an inverter section, reading rotor position from a hall sensor on the stator. Faults show as two- or three-character codes (4C, 5C, dC, UE, 3E and others), and the platform has a built-in self-test (Smart Install) documented by Samsung.
Safety first
- Unplug and shut off the water before opening the cabinet.
- The motor drive section holds charge after unplugging; wait several minutes before touching the board or motor leads.
- Expect hot water in the pump filter after a hot cycle; drain into a pan slowly.
- Test mode energizes the pump, valves and motor; keep hands out of the drum.
How it works
Start: the board checks the door switch, energizes the door lock and confirms it latched before any water enters. If the lock does not confirm, the cycle stops with a door code (dC/dE family).
Fill: one or more solenoids on the inlet valve open and route water through the detergent drawer. The board reads tub level from a pressure (water-level) sensor connected to the tub by a small air hose and stops filling at the target level. No water rise within the time limit gives a fill code (4C/4E/nF).
Wash: the drum is tumbled in alternating directions at low speed. On heater models a heater under the drum and a temperature sensor hold the set temperature.
Drain: the drain pump at the front-bottom runs, pulling water through a coin/lint filter behind the lower-front access cover. If level does not fall in the time limit the board shows a drain code (5C/5E/nd).
Load and balance sensing: before high-speed spin the board ramps the drum slowly and watches motor current and speed ripple from the hall sensor to judge load size and imbalance. It redistributes and retries; repeated failure ends with an unbalance code (UE/Ub) and a low-speed or no-spin finish.
Spin: the drum ramps to the selected speed while the pump keeps running. Many models also use a vibration (MEMS) sensor; a sensor fault shows as 8E/8C.
Door release: the lock is held until the drum stops and no water is detected above the door line, then released. A drum still turning or water left in the tub keeps the door locked.
