MrCool DIY 4th Gen mini-split: quick sheet
Covers: MrCool DIY 4th Generation single-zone and multi-zone ductless heat pumps (R-410A) with pre-charged Quick Connect line sets. The 5th Gen (R-454B) replaced it; 5th Gen R-454B line sets are not compatible with 4th Gen units.
The best-known DIY-installable mini-split. Homeowners install it themselves, so callbacks are often wiring, line-set kinks or Quick Connect leaks. Indoor display shows two-character or four-character codes (e.g. E1 / EL01).
Safety first
- 230 V on most sizes and inverter capacitors that hold charge: lock out and wait before touching the outdoor board.
- Refrigerant circuit is blocked: refer leaks and charge issues to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Inverter compressor and variable-speed fans modulate capacity; indoor and outdoor boards talk over a communication wire.
Line sets come pre-charged with Quick Connect couplings, so no vacuum or charging is done during a normal DIY install.
Sensors: T1 room, T2 indoor coil, T3 outdoor coil, T4 outdoor ambient, T5 discharge; a failed sensor gives a specific code.
Comparison sources list the 12K 4th Gen at about 22 SEER2 with heating down to about -4 °F.
