Window air conditioner (incl. U-shaped inverter): field service manual

Covers: Standard box-type window units with mechanical or electronic controls and U-shaped inverter window units (Midea U style and similar saddle designs). Series names only; confirm details on the model's tech sheet.

Single sourceBrands: Frigidaire, GE, LG, Midea9 components

A window unit is a complete refrigeration system in one cabinet: the indoor side cools and dries room air, the outdoor side rejects heat. Most box units use one motor with a shaft out of each end to drive both the indoor blower wheel and the outdoor fan blade, and many use a slinger ring on that outdoor blade to throw condensate onto the hot coil. U-shaped units straddle the window sash so the window closes into the gap, and most use a variable-speed (inverter) compressor.

Safety first

  • Unplug before opening the cabinet; the compressor and fan can start without warning.
  • Discharge capacitors through a resistor or discharge tool before handling; do not short them with a bare screwdriver.
  • Fins are sharp; wear gloves. Lift units with a helper.
  • Inverter units store high DC voltage after unplugging; verify near 0 V DC before touching the drive board.
  • Never cut, braze, recharge or attach gauges to the refrigerant circuit: that is EPA Section 608 work.

How it works

When the control calls for cooling, it energizes the compressor and the fan motor. The compressor pushes refrigerant to the outdoor (condenser) coil, where heat is released to outside air; refrigerant then passes through a metering device into the indoor (evaporator) coil, where it absorbs heat from room air pulled through the filter by the blower wheel.

Moisture condenses on the cold indoor coil, drips into the base pan and runs to the outdoor end. On slinger-ring designs, a ring molded onto the outdoor fan blade dips into this water and sprays it onto the condenser coil, where it evaporates and helps reject heat. A plugged drain hole on these units is normal: the water is meant to stay in the pan for the slinger.

Electronic models read a room (ambient) thermistor near the intake to cycle the compressor and an evaporator (coil) thermistor for freeze protection; heat-capable models may add a discharge-air sensor. Frigidaire displays faults from these sensors as AS, ES and HS codes, and P1 when the base pan is full.

Older mechanical units use a bulb-type thermostat and a rotary selector switch instead of a board and sensors.

Single-speed compressors cycle fully on and off; there is usually a built-in restart delay of a few minutes to protect the compressor. Inverter (U-shaped and some newer box) units vary compressor speed from a drive board rather than cycling, which is quieter and more efficient but means the outdoor electronics hold stored DC voltage.
