Portable air conditioner (single and dual hose): field service manual
Covers: Floor-standing portable units with one or two window hoses, internal condensate tank or pump, and auto-evaporation in cooling mode.
A portable AC is a full refrigeration system on wheels that dumps its heat through a hose to a window kit. Single-hose units use room air to cool the condenser and blow it outside, which creates negative pressure; dual-hose units pull outside air in through one hose and send it back out the other. Most calls are about water-full codes, poor cooling from hose and window-kit problems, or sensor faults.
Safety first
- Unplug before draining or opening; water and line voltage share the base.
- Do not tilt or move with water in the tank.
- Discharge capacitors before touching motor wiring.
- No refrigerant work: compressor, recharge or leak repair goes to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Room air is pulled across the evaporator and returned to the room cold. A second airstream crosses the condenser and leaves through the exhaust hose carrying the heat.
Single hose: the condenser air comes from the room. Because that air is exhausted, replacement warm air leaks in around doors and windows, reducing real-world capacity. Dual hose: condenser air comes from outdoors through an intake hose, so the room is not depressurized.
Condensate: in cooling mode most current units pick up water and throw it onto the hot condenser so it leaves with the exhaust as vapor (auto-evaporation). In very humid weather the unit can make water faster than it evaporates it, and the excess collects in a lower tank or pan.
A float or level switch watches that tank. When it is full the unit stops the compressor and shows a water-full code (GE FL, LG CH04/FL, Haier FL). Dry/dehumidify mode usually does not auto-evaporate and needs a continuous drain hose or emptying.
Some models include a small internal condensate pump that lifts water to the exhaust stream or out a drain port; its failure looks like a constant water-full code.
