Whirlpool WTW5000D-series top-load washer: quick sheet

Covers: Whirlpool WTW5000DW and its engineering revisions (WTW5000DW0, DW1, DW2, DW3 seen in parts listings). 4.3 cu ft, 27.5 in-class HE top-load. Launch year not confirmed by our sources; the 'D' letter marks the model's introduction year in Whirlpool numbering (not the build date). Retailers list it as discontinued and point to the WTW5010L as the newer version.

Whirlpool's entry/mid HE top-loader of the late 2010s: 4.3 cu ft stainless basket, low-water wash with a wash plate (retailers list it as impeller, no agitator), electronic console with F-code diagnostics. Most calls are drive (F7 family), lid lock (F5 family) and drain issues. Deep diagnostics: see the Whirlpool / Maytag top-load washer field service manual.

Safety first

  • Unplug the washer and shut both water valves before opening the cabinet or console.
  • Live-voltage checks in diagnostic mode only with insulated probes and one hand clear; never reach into the basket while the drive is commanded.
  • Drain the tub (or bail it) before tipping the washer or pulling the drive; a full tub is very heavy and floods the floor.

How it works

After the lid locks, the control senses the load by turning the dry basket, then adds a measured, low amount of water. The pressure sensor reports level.

During wash the shifter sets the drive so the motor turns only the wash plate, rolling clothes through the water. For spin the shifter couples the basket; the control watches the rotor position sensor and flags F7-family faults when expected motion is missing.

Maximum spin is about 660 rpm (retailer listing). The lid stays locked until the basket stops.
