Whirlpool WTW4816F / WTW4955H-series top-load washer: quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool WTW4816FW (3.5 cu ft, dual-action spiral agitator) and WTW4955HW (3.8 cu ft, two-way wash agitator), with their engineering revisions. Years not confirmed by our sources; the F and H letters are Whirlpool introduction-year letters, so the H model is the later of the two. WTW4816FW is listed as discontinued.
Budget agitator top-loaders with knob consoles, aimed at customers who want a traditional agitator. Same family of electronic drive, shifter and lid-lock logic as other Whirlpool HE top-loads of the period, so the F-code list and diagnostic approach carry over. Deep diagnostics: see the Whirlpool / Maytag top-load washer field service manual.
Safety first
- Unplug the washer and shut both water valves before opening the cabinet or console.
- Live-voltage checks in diagnostic mode only with insulated probes and one hand clear; never reach into the basket while the drive is commanded.
- Drain the tub (or bail it) before tipping the washer or pulling the drive; a full tub is very heavy and floods the floor.
How it works
The control locks the lid, senses the load and fills to a level set by the pressure sensor (deeper-water options exist on these agitator models).
WTW4816F uses a dual-action spiral agitator; WTW4955H uses a two-way wash action in which agitator and basket turn opposite ways. Both rely on the shifter to switch between agitate and spin.
Spin is checked through the rotor position sensor; drive faults land in the F7 family and lid faults in the F5 family.
