Whirlpool's mainstream standard-depth 4-door: French doors on top, a temperature-adjustable exterior drawer in the middle, and a freezer drawer at the bottom. It is the Whirlpool-family single-evaporator French-door platform with adaptive defrost, so the core diagnosis matches the WRF555SDF (cold air from the freezer evaporator also feeds the fresh-food section and the ice compartment). The WRX986SIH moves the ice bin into the left fresh-food door (Whirlpool calls it In-Door-Ice storage); the two models take different water filters.

Safety first

  • Unplug the refrigerator before removing covers, fans, heaters or sensors.
  • Shut off the water before opening any valve or fill connection.
  • Never chip ice off the evaporator with tools; thaw it with power off or gentle steam.
  • Live-voltage checks at the main or inverter board are caution work: insulated probes, one hand.
  • Sealed refrigerant system work (compressor, leaks, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

One sealed system with the evaporator behind the freezer rear panel. Fresh food, the middle drawer and the ice compartment are cooled with freezer air sent through ducts and dampers. Sealed-system work is referral only.

The middle drawer has its own temperature selection; the control meters cold air into it. A drawer that will not hold its setting is usually an airflow (damper, duct ice, fan) problem before it is a control problem.

Adaptive defrost: the control counts compressor run time and door openings, then runs the defrost heater until the defrost sensor or bimetal says the coil is clear. Defrost water drains to a pan in the machine compartment.

Ice and water: a valve at the bottom rear feeds the filter, the dispenser and the ice maker. On the WRX986SIH the ice maker is in the fresh-food section and the bin is in the left door; WRX735SDH listings also place the ice maker in the refrigerator section (confirm on the unit).

Whirlpool says normal compressor run time is about 40-80% at average room temperature, allow 24 hours to cool down after installation, and wait 24 hours between control changes.

Adaptive defrost control (ADC) board: how to diagnose it

An adaptive defrost board replaces the old cam timer. It counts compressor run time (and on some boards door-open time) and adjusts the next defrost interval based on how long the last one took. Test the heater and the cold bimetal first, then force a defrost: if the heater warms on a forced defrost but the coil still ices, the board isn't starting defrost on its own.

Ice dispenser not dispensing ice (ice maker is making ice)

Most cases are mechanical: cubes fused into a block, a bin not fully seated on the auger drive, or ice behind the auger motor. After that, check the electrical path: door switch, dispenser switch, auger motor voltage and, on crushed/cubed models, the cube solenoid. Water dispensing working is a useful clue that the dispenser control has power.

Refrigerator runs all the time

First decide if it's really a problem. Whirlpool says 40-80% run time is normal at average room temperature, and newer variable-speed compressors are designed to run long at low speed. If it's truly excessive, the usual causes are heat-rejection problems (dirty condenser, dead condenser fan), air leaks (gaskets, doors) and a frosted evaporator. A compressor or refrigerant fault is a referral.
