One of the most-installed Whirlpool dishwashers in rentals, flips and builder homes: front buttons, plastic tub, vinyl racks, 1-Hour Wash, and a removable filter in the tub floor. Field reports center on drain problems (filter, check valve in the drain-hose elbow, glass in the pump, disposer plug) and on heating-element failures causing poor wash and wet dishes. Same F#E# codes and 1-2-3 diagnostic routine as other Whirlpool electronic dishwashers.
Safety first
- Breaker off before panels come off.
- Hot-water valve closed before valve or hose work.
- Let the element cool.
- Gloves in the sump (glass).
- Never bypass the float switch.
How it works
Timed fill through the inlet valve; float switch as overfill guard.
One wash motor drives the spray arms; the WDF540PAD adds a soil sensor that reads temperature, soil and load during prewash and wash to set cycle length.
A check valve in the drain-hose elbow at the pump stops dirty water from flowing back; if it sticks, the unit drains slowly or intermittently.
An exposed element on the tub floor heats water and drying air; with heated dry off, drying relies on residual heat.
Whirlpool's service sheet says about 1 in of water standing in the sump after a cycle is normal.
