Maytag MDB8959SK (MDB8959SKZ) dishwasher: quick sheet
Covers: Maytag 24 in top-control MDB8959SK* built-in dishwashers with stainless tall tub, third-level rack, Dual Power Filtration and PowerDry (Z = fingerprint-resistant stainless, B = black). Whirlpool-built electronic platform; listed as discontinued by some retailers.
Maytag's upper top-control model: 15 place settings, 47 dBA, four spray arms, a third rack and a heated dry with Long and Short settings (marketed as PowerDry). Mechanically it shares the Whirlpool-platform sump, chopper and diagnostics with the MDB4949, but the hidden controls are on the top edge of the door and there is an extra spray path for the third rack.
Safety first
- Breaker off before removing any panel; the junction box is live otherwise.
- Close the water supply before valve work.
- Let the element cool.
- Do not bypass the float or leak switch.
How it works
Fill and wash follow the Whirlpool platform: timed fill through the inlet valve, float switch as overfill guard, one wash motor feeding the spray arms. With four spray arms and a third rack, a diverter or manifold routes water between levels, so a weak upper or third-rack wash points at that path.
Dual Power Filtration pairs a microfilter with a 4-blade stainless chopper so soil is either trapped or cut fine enough to drain.
PowerBlast is the heavy-soil cycle with higher pressure and temperature. Options listed include High Temp, Sani Rinse, Steam Sanitize (per some listings), Delay, and Short or Long Heated Dry.
Drying uses the tub-floor element to heat the air; the Long setting extends the heated phase. Because the controls sit on the top edge of the door, steam venting past a bad door seal or a long heated dry can affect the console over time.
