Thermador Star Sapphire / Sapphire dishwashers (DWHD770, DWHD870, DWHD860 Masterpiece): quick sheet

Covers: Thermador 24-inch built-in dishwashers in the Sapphire and Star Sapphire lines: DWHD770 (for example DWHD770WFP, DWHD770WFM, DWHD770CFP, DWHD770WPR panel ready), DWHD870 and the older DWHD860 / DWHD650 Masterpiece and Star Sapphire models (for example DWHD860RFM, DWHD860RPR, DWHD650GFP). Suffix letters mark handle and panel style. These are BSH builds that share most hardware with Bosch 800 / Benchmark dishwashers: see also the Bosch dishwasher field manual (slug bosch-dishwasher). Read the rating label on the inner door edge for model and FD number.

Premium tall-tub dishwashers with a stainless tub, third rack, Wi-Fi (Home Connect), a built-in water softener on many DWHD770 models and StarDry drying with zeolite on the newer ones. Mechanically they behave like BSH (Bosch) units: a combined circulation pump and heater ('heat pump' in Thermador's code list), a separate drain pump, a flow meter, and a leak float in the base pan that shuts the water off and shows E15 (E3100 on four-digit software). Most calls are drain codes (filter, drain pump cover, air gap), base-pan leaks, low water flow, and scale in hard-water homes; Thermador's own code list says which ones the owner can clear and which need service.

Safety first

  • Breaker off and verify dead before opening the junction box or reaching under the tub (120 V, heater circuit: caution).
  • Shut the water supply before disconnecting the inlet line.
  • Re-anchor the dishwasher to the counter or cabinets after service so the door does not tip the unit.

How it works

Fill: the inlet valve opens and a flow meter counts the water. Thermador lists E14 / E3000 for a flow-meter or inflow problem and E16 / E17 / E18 (E3200, E3300, E3400) for water that does not arrive correctly; it quotes a required inflow of about 10 liters per minute.

Wash and heat: the circulation pump has the heater built into its housing (a 'heat pump' in Thermador's list, not a refrigeration heat pump). Scale on that heater shows E12 or E2060; heater electronics faults show E04 / E0105, and a heater fault inside the pump shows E2030 or E6001. A diverter sends water to upper or lower arms (E0106 is a diverter circuit fault; E6160 is the Zone Control lower arm not finding its home position).

Drain: a separate drain pump with a snap-on cover sits in the sump under the filter. Drain codes (E22, E24, E25, E6102, E6103, E9240) are usually the filter, debris under the pump cover, a kinked hose, or a blocked air gap; E23 / E6101 point at the pump itself.

Leak protection: a float switch in the base pan detects water and the control shuts the inlet and runs the drain pump; the code is E15 (E3100). Water in the pan usually comes from a hose, fitting, pump seal or door gasket leak, not from the float.

Drying: StarDry models heat a zeolite mineral chamber that releases dry warm air (Thermador lists E2120 for the zeolite heater and E2130 for its fan); the rest use condensation drying. Low supply voltage is its own code (E27 / E9001) and is not an appliance fault.
