Sub-Zero PRO 48 refrigerator/freezer (PRO4850, PRO4850G, earlier 648PRO): quick sheet
Covers: Sub-Zero 48-inch PRO side-by-side refrigerator/freezer: current PRO4850 (solid stainless door) and PRO4850G (glass refrigerator door), plus the earlier 648PRO, which Sub-Zero's answers also call 'PRO 48' or the PRO48 series. Classic (BI / CL), Designer and 600 / 700 series units are other sheets. Read the rating plate inside the refrigerator compartment for the model and serial.
Sub-Zero's heaviest full-size unit (about 846 lb listed) with two separate refrigeration systems, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer, on a plain 115 V, 15 A dedicated circuit. The refrigerator holds 18.7 cu. ft. and the freezer 11.7 cu. ft. Most service calls start with a flashing Service indicator; Sub-Zero's first steps are to check cabinet temperatures, clean the condenser, make sure nothing stops the doors closing and power-cycle at the breaker. Excessive-run codes (EC40 freezer, EC50 refrigerator) send you to the condenser first, numbered 648PRO codes (for example 35 fan speed error) get a breaker reset and then service, and ice complaints usually trace to water pressure, filters, a warm freezer, or the ice maker shut-off arm.
Safety first
- Breaker off before removing covers or working in the machine compartment (115 V, fans start automatically).
- Sealed-system diagnosis and repair is blocked here: refer to a Factory Certified / EPA 608 technician.
- The unit weighs over 800 lb and is anti-tip anchored: do not pull it from the opening without the installation guide and proper equipment.
How it works
Dual refrigeration: the refrigerator and freezer each have their own compressor, condenser path, evaporator and fan, so the fresh-food side stays humid while the freezer stays dry. A warm compartment with the other one normal is a problem in that compartment's system.
Condenser: Sub-Zero groups the PRO48 with the Classic built-in series for condenser cleaning: the grille assembly lifts and rotates up to expose the condenser, which is vacuumed with a soft brush every 6-12 months. A dirty condenser is the first suspect for a flashing Service light, EC40 or EC50.
Excessive-run logic: when a compressor runs longer than expected, the control logs EC40 (freezer) or EC50 (refrigerator) and flashes Service. Sub-Zero's rule: if the cabinet is within about 10°F of set point, clean the condenser and clear the code by holding the door-ajar (bell) key about 15 seconds once temperatures recover; if it is more than 10°F high and the door was not left open, book service and do not clear the code.
Fault codes on the 648PRO appear on the control panel (for example 01, 02, 35, 42). Sub-Zero defines 35 as a fan speed error; for every numbered code the owner step is breaker off 30 seconds, retest, then Factory Certified Service.
Ice: Sub-Zero says the freezer must be at or below 5°F (0°F recommended) for ice, allow up to 24 hours after power-up, and that if the fill valve runs longer than 15 seconds the ice maker shuts off and 'Service Ice' flashes.
