Sub-Zero Designer (formerly Integrated) column and over-and-under refrigeration (DEC / DET / IC / IT): quick sheet

Covers: Panel-ready Sub-Zero Designer refrigeration: current column refrigerators and freezers with the DEC prefix (for example DEC2450R, DEC3050R, DEC3050RID, DEC2450FI) and over-and-under units with the DET prefix (for example DET3050CI); the earlier Legacy Designer / Integrated generation with IC (columns, for example IC-24R, IC-30R, IC-30FI, IC-30RID), IT (over-and-under, for example IT-30R, IT-36R, IT-30CI) and ID (drawers) prefixes. Suffix /L or /R is hinge side. Designer wine storage (IW / DEU) is a separate sheet. Read the rating plate inside the cabinet for the exact model and serial before ordering parts.

Fully integrated, panel-ready units that sit flush in cabinetry: each column is its own appliance with its own compressor and control, so a 'refrigerator plus freezer' pair is two separate service calls in one kitchen. They run on a plain 115 V, 15 A dedicated circuit and current DEC/DET models use R-600a (isobutane). The control logs coded faults by zone (thermistors, fans, defrost heater) and the factory answer for almost every code is the same: breaker off 30 seconds, retest, and book service if it returns. The most frequent field causes are not exotic: a dirty condenser behind the louvered kickplate, a kickplate buried behind a custom toe kick, or a defrost fault that frosts the evaporator.

Safety first

  • Turn the breaker off before removing covers; the machine compartment has 115 V and a fan that can start without warning.
  • Current models use R-600a, a flammable refrigerant: no flames or sparks near the tubing; sealed-system work is blocked here and must go to a certified technician.
  • Panel-ready doors are heavy; do not hang on the door or remove panels without the install guide.

How it works

Each cabinet is a single-system design: one compressor, one condenser at the bottom behind the louvered kickplate, and an evaporator with a fan for that cabinet. A refrigerator column and a freezer column side by side do not share any refrigeration parts.

The electronic control reads cabinet (zone) thermistors and evaporator thermistors and drives the compressor, evaporator fan and condenser fan. When it sees an open, shorted or unstable sensor, a fan that does not report the commanded speed, or a defrost that does not finish, it stores a numbered fault (Sub-Zero lists Designer codes in a 'family / zone / detail' style such as 10 1 00 for a zone 1 thermistor open or 35 1 00 for a zone 1 evaporator fan open).

Defrost uses a heater on the evaporator with a bimetal (thermostat) that ends the heat. Sub-Zero's Designer page for code 20 4 50 describes the control leaving defrost four times in a row on timeout without the bimetal tripping, which it treats as an open defrost heater path.

Excessive-run codes (EC40 freezer, EC50 refrigerator) are logged when the compressor runs longer than the control expects. Sub-Zero says to clean the condenser first, then clear the code (hold the door-ajar bell key about 15 seconds) only if temperatures have come back near normal; a code that returns, or a cabinet more than about 10°F over set point, means a service diagnosis.

Some models (IC-30RID, DEC3050RID) add an internal water dispenser, freezer models add an ice maker with a water filter, and many add an air purification cartridge with its own small fan (Sub-Zero lists a 35 A 00 code for that fan open).
