Sharp SMD2470 (24-inch) / SMD3070 (30-inch) microwave drawer: quick sheet
Covers: Sharp 1.2 cu. ft. microwave drawers: SMD2470AS / SMD2470ASY (24 in., stainless), SMD2470AH (black stainless) and SMD3070AS / SMD3070ASY (30 in. wide face, same cavity). Newer Easy Wave Open SMD2479JS / Wi-Fi SMD2489ES and convection SMD2499FS are related but not covered in detail. Approx. 2012 onward. Read the model on the label inside the drawer opening.
The most-installed microwave drawer in the US: a 120 V transformer microwave mounted under a counter or wall oven, whose cavity pulls out on a motor-driven drawer opened with a touch key. Besides the normal microwave parts (magnetron, HV transformer, capacitor, diode, door/drawer interlock switches, fuses), it has a drawer motor, gear/rack drive, position switches and a flexing harness. Most calls are drawer won't open/close, won't heat, or controls dead.
Safety first
- Microwave high voltage can kill even unplugged: discharge the HV capacitor with an insulated tool and verify before touching internal parts. Never run the unit with the case off.
- Interlock switches are safety devices: replace with the exact part; never bypass.
- Magnetron, HV and control repairs are for trained technicians (Sharp also advises a qualified technician).
How it works
Supply: 120 V, 60 Hz, 15 A (Greentoe); cooking power listed as 950 W by Sharp for SMD2470ASY / SMD3070ASY (some older SMD2470AS listings say 1,000 W).
Drawer drive: pressing OPEN or CLOSE runs a small motor that moves the drawer on its slides through a gear/rack; position switches tell the control when the drawer is fully open or closed. Sharp advises using the keys, not pushing or pulling by hand, except in a power failure.
Cooking: with the drawer fully closed the interlock switches close; the control powers the HV transformer, which with the HV capacitor and diode feeds the magnetron. Sensor cook uses a humidity sensor in the exhaust path.
Ventilation: the unit breathes through the front; built-in airflow on newer models allows flush or proud mounting without trim kits. Blocking the front vents or a tight countertop overhang causes overheating and access complaints.
