Frigidaire FFMV1846V / FFMV1645T / Gallery FGMV176NTF / FGMV17WNVF over-the-range microwave: quick sheet

Covers: Frigidaire 30-inch over-the-range microwaves: FFMV1846V (1.8 cu. ft., suffixes VS, VW, VB, VD), FFMV1645T (1.6 cu. ft., TS, TW, TB, TD, TM), Frigidaire Gallery FGMV176NTF (1.7 cu. ft.) and FGMV17WNVF (1.7 cu. ft.). Transformer-type units with a bottom grease filter, 2-speed vent and a turntable, sold roughly 2014-2021 and now discontinued (FMOS-series replacements). Factory revisions are shown by the last letter of the serial model (for example FFMV1846VSA/VSB); parts differ between revisions, so always order by the full model number.

This is Frigidaire's high-volume OTR family: 1,000 W cooking over a 2-speed vent (about 300 CFM on the 1.8 and 1.7 cu. ft. models, about 220 CFM on the 1.6 cu. ft. FFMV1645T), with LED cooktop lighting on most builds. They hang from a wall plate and bolt through the upper cabinet. Field calls center on the door switch stack and latch (the switches sit in a plastic holder next to the door and wear with the latch), blown line fuses from switch or latch faults, runs-but-no-heat HV faults, keypad problems from cooktop steam, and vent fan noise.

Safety first

  • DANGER: the HV capacitor can store a lethal charge after unplugging. Only trained techs open the cabinet; discharge with an insulated tool and confirm 0 V before touching the capacitor, diode, transformer, magnetron or HV wiring.
  • Never jumper or bypass a door switch, never fit a higher-rated fuse, and never run the oven with the case off.
  • If the switch area pops or sparks when the door moves, take the unit out of service until the switch stack is replaced.
  • Breaker off before reaching for the cord in the upper cabinet; two people to remove and rehang the unit, with the wall plate anchored to a stud.
  • Live checks at the transformer primary or relay outputs are for trained techs only, with the HV side untouched.
  • After any door, latch or switch repair, confirm the oven stops instantly when the door opens and do a leakage check if a meter is available.

How it works

Door and power path: line power passes the main cartridge fuse, then a stack of door switches mounted in a plastic holder beside the door opening, behind the control panel. Two switches are normally open and close when the latch hooks enter (they allow cooking); a third, the monitor switch, is normally closed and opens with the door shut. If an open-type switch sticks closed when the door opens, the monitor shorts the line and blows the fuse so the oven cannot run with the door open. Worn latch hooks or a worn latch bracket can make the switches close out of sequence, which also blows the fuse.

Heating: the control board relay energizes the HV transformer; the transformer, HV capacitor and HV diode make the high voltage for the magnetron while a low-voltage winding lights the magnetron filament. Thermal cut-outs (thermostats) on the magnetron and the cavity open on overheating, and the cooling fan runs whenever the oven cooks.

Ventilation: a 2-speed blower on top of the chassis draws air through the grease filters in the bottom of the unit and sends it out the top, out the back or back into the kitchen through a charcoal filter (convertible venting, set at installation by the blower orientation and damper). As on most OTR units, a heat sensor can switch the vent on by itself when the cooktop is hot and keep it on until it cools.

Controls: the membrane/touch keypad and control board run the timer, 10 power levels, one-touch keys and sensor modes (Sensor Reheat and, on Gallery models, sensor cooking that reads steam from the food). Frigidaire models have a control lock and a retail demo mode; both make the unit look dead or keep it from heating without any failed part.

LG LMV2031 / LMV1831 / LMVM2033 over-the-range microwave: quick sheet

LG 30-inch over-the-range microwaves LMV2031 (2.0 cu. ft., suffixes such as ST, SS, SB, SW, BD), LMV1831 (1.8 cu. ft., ST, SS, BD) and LMVM2033 (2.0 cu. ft., stainless). Transformer-type (non-inverter) units with a hidden vent grille, glass touch controls and a turntable, sold roughly 2015-2022; most are now listed as discontinued. LMHM2237 (2.2 cu. ft., taller cabinet, ExtendaVent 2.0) is a different, larger chassis: the fault logic below still applies, but check its own parts list before ordering anything.

Countertop microwave (transformer type): field service manual

Conventional countertop microwaves that use a heavy iron-core high-voltage transformer, an HV capacitor and an HV diode (most GE, Whirlpool family, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Sharp and private-label countertop units). Over-the-range units use the same HV circuit; see the OTR manual for the vent system.

Inverter microwaves (Panasonic, LG NeoChef and others): field service manual

Countertop and some built-in microwaves that replace the iron-core transformer with an inverter circuit board: most Panasonic models (marketed as Inverter), LG NeoChef Smart Inverter, and inverter models from other brands. Confirm by looking for a finned circuit board in place of the heavy transformer.
