Samsung RT18M6215 / RT18M6213 top-freezer refrigerator with FlexZone: quick sheet

Covers: Samsung 18 cu ft (17.6 cu ft measured) 29-inch top-freezer units RT18M6215** (SR stainless, SG black stainless, WW white) and the RT18M62*3** sibling listings; ENERGY STAR shows RT18M62*5** on the market from February 2017 and RT18M62*3** from March 2017 (one RT18M62*3** variant is listed without an ice maker). Retailers now list RT18M6215SR as discontinued. Also sold with /AA-00 and /AA-01 revisions, so read the full model code before ordering parts.

A popular builder and rental top-freezer that is more complex than most: Samsung markets it with Twin Cooling Plus (separate cooling for the fridge and freezer) and a FlexZone freezer that can be switched to fridge temperatures, plus a factory ice maker and a digital inverter compressor. Most calls are 'fridge warm, freezer OK' from defrost or fan faults.

Safety first

  • Unplug before removing covers, fans, heaters or sensors.
  • Shut off water before opening the valve or fill line.
  • Never chip ice off an evaporator with tools.
  • Live-voltage checks at the board or compressor drive are caution work.
  • Sealed refrigerant system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

Freezer on top, fresh food below, compressor and condenser in the machine compartment at the bottom rear. The digital inverter compressor runs at variable speed under board control; refrigerant work is referral only.

Twin Cooling Plus means the fridge and freezer are cooled separately, which keeps the fresh-food air humid and the freezer dry. On a call, confirm on the tech sheet how many evaporators, fans and defrost heaters this cabinet has, because a fault in one section can leave the other working normally.

The FlexZone setting lets the top compartment run at fridge temperatures. A 'freezer not freezing' complaint can simply be FlexZone set to fridge mode, so check the panel before opening anything.

Defrost is board-timed with heater, sensor and thermal-fuse backup; melt water drains to the pan in the machine compartment.

Adaptive defrost control (ADC) board: how to diagnose it

An adaptive defrost board replaces the old cam timer. It counts compressor run time (and on some boards door-open time) and adjusts the next defrost interval based on how long the last one took. Test the heater and the cold bimetal first, then force a defrost: if the heater warms on a forced defrost but the coil still ices, the board isn't starting defrost on its own.

Ice dispenser not dispensing ice (ice maker is making ice)

Most cases are mechanical: cubes fused into a block, a bin not fully seated on the auger drive, or ice behind the auger motor. After that, check the electrical path: door switch, dispenser switch, auger motor voltage and, on crushed/cubed models, the cube solenoid. Water dispensing working is a useful clue that the dispenser control has power.

Refrigerator runs all the time

First decide if it's really a problem. Whirlpool says 40-80% run time is normal at average room temperature, and newer variable-speed compressors are designed to run long at low speed. If it's truly excessive, the usual causes are heat-rejection problems (dirty condenser, dead condenser fan), air leaks (gaskets, doors) and a frosted evaporator. A compressor or refrigerant fault is a referral.
