Entry 3-door French-door in Samsung's T generation: no through-the-door dispenser (ENERGY STAR lists the dispenser field as No) and an automatic ice maker in the freezer drawer rather than the fresh-food-door ice room used on dispenser models. Retailers market it with 'All-Around Cooling' and a digital inverter compressor. Most field calls are ice maker freeze-ups or broken cubes, and the usual frost/defrost and fan problems. Safety first

  • Unplug the refrigerator before removing covers, fans, heaters or sensors.
  • Shut off and bleed the water supply before opening the valve or ice maker fill connections.
  • Never chip ice off the evaporator with tools; a punctured coil is a sealed-system failure.
  • Live-voltage checks at the main board or compressor drive are caution work: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry.
  • Sealed refrigerant system (compressor replacement, leak repair, recharge, brazing) is blocked: confirm the symptom, protect the food and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

Bottom-freezer layout: fresh food on top behind two doors, one freezer drawer below, compressor and condenser in the machine compartment at the bottom rear. The compressor is a variable-speed digital inverter type driven by the main board; refrigerant work is sealed-system and referral only.

Because there is no door dispenser, the ice maker sits in the freezer and drops ice into a bin in the drawer. It freezes water in a twisting tray and harvests on a board/ice-maker timer, so a freezer running warm or a slow water feed shows up first as small, hollow or few cubes.

Defrost is board-controlled: a heater under the evaporator, a defrost sensor and a thermal fuse/bimetal backup. Melt water runs to a drain and a pan under the cabinet. A blocked or frozen drain can back water up and freeze around nearby parts.

Retailer listings call the airflow 'All-Around Cooling' rather than Samsung's Twin Cooling Plus. Check the tech sheet behind the lower rear cover to confirm how many evaporators and fans this cabinet uses before you plan a defrost or fan repair.

Adaptive defrost control (ADC) board: how to diagnose it

An adaptive defrost board replaces the old cam timer. It counts compressor run time (and on some boards door-open time) and adjusts the next defrost interval based on how long the last one took. Test the heater and the cold bimetal first, then force a defrost: if the heater warms on a forced defrost but the coil still ices, the board isn't starting defrost on its own.

Ice dispenser not dispensing ice (ice maker is making ice)

Most cases are mechanical: cubes fused into a block, a bin not fully seated on the auger drive, or ice behind the auger motor. After that, check the electrical path: door switch, dispenser switch, auger motor voltage and, on crushed/cubed models, the cube solenoid. Water dispensing working is a useful clue that the dispenser control has power.

Refrigerator runs all the time

First decide if it's really a problem. Whirlpool says 40-80% run time is normal at average room temperature, and newer variable-speed compressors are designed to run long at low speed. If it's truly excessive, the usual causes are heat-rejection problems (dirty condenser, dead condenser fan), air leaks (gaskets, doors) and a frosted evaporator. A compressor or refrigerant fault is a referral.
