NewAir ClearIce40 countertop clear-ice maker (40 lb/day): quick sheet

Covers: NewAir ClearIce40 (MFG part CLEARICE40), the hand-filled countertop clear-cube maker sold through NewAir and many retailers. Not the NewAir 15 in undercounter clear-ice units.

Single sourceBrands: NewAir2 components

A portable that makes clear cubes the way undercounter machines do, by running water over a chilled tray so ice freezes in layers, then dropping the batch into an insulated bin. Melt water drains back and is reused. No self-clean cycle and no water line: it is filled by hand. Calls are add-water light, slow or cloudy ice from scale and dirty water, and placement (heat, blocked vents).

Safety first

  • Unplug before cleaning.
  • R-600a is flammable: no flames or sparks near the unit if a leak is suspected; refer sealed-system issues to an EPA 608 certified tech.

How it works

Water is pumped over a super-cooled tray and freezes one layer at a time, giving clear cubes; a new batch about every 7 minutes in normal conditions.

The bin is insulated but not refrigerated; ice slowly melts and drains back to the reservoir to be re-frozen.

Two-button control with indicator lights for ice ready, add water and basket full.

Refrigerant is R-600a (isobutane, flammable).

Undercounter ice machine 'no ice' or bad cubes: check the water supply and drain against the maker's limits first

Ice machines are fussy about the supply: pressure, water temperature and drain fall all have published limits, and they differ by brand. U-Line's 15 in clear-ice machines want 20-120 psi cold water on a 1/4 in compression fitting and a gravity drain falling about 1/4 in per foot (or a pump model with up to 10 ft lift). Manitowoc's NEO undercounters want 20-80 psi and 45-90 °F water, with a 3/8 in FPT inlet and a 1/2 in FPT drain. Confirm the install meets those numbers before replacing valves, pumps or boards.

Refrigerator ice maker making small, thin or hollow cubes

In a refrigerator ice maker this is almost always a water-supply problem: low pressure, a clogged or badly seated filter, a kinked line or a reverse-osmosis system starving the valve. Low fill means the mold or tray doesn't fill. On Whirlpool-style ice makers the last cavity, next to the thermostat, starves first and triggers an early harvest. Fix the supply before replacing parts.

Refrigerator ice maker freezes cubes but won't harvest

Rule out the simple stops first: the shutoff arm or bin sensor, the On/Off control and a warm freezer. Then force a harvest with the ice maker's own test (T-H jumper on Whirlpool modules, three arm presses on GE, the Test button on Samsung and LG). If the forced harvest works, the ice maker is fine and the trigger (thermostat/thermistor or temperature) is the issue. If it doesn't, the ice maker usually gets replaced.
