GE Profile Opal (first generation, 24 lb/day) countertop nugget ice maker: quick sheet
Covers: Original GE Profile Opal countertop nugget ice maker, rated 24 lb/day with a 3 lb bin (retail model OPAL01GENSS and color variants). The Opal 2.0 (Wi-Fi, 38 lb/day class) has its own sheet: qs-ge-opal-2.
A hand-filled countertop auger-type nugget maker: water from a reservoir freezes on the inside of a chilled cylinder, an auger scrapes and pushes the ice out through a die into a pull-out bin, and melt water drains back into the reservoir to be re-used. Most calls are scale (needs descaling), dirty or stale water, a machine placed too close to walls or in a hot spot, and 'not making ice' that turns out to be a full reservoir of old water or a squeak during defrost.
Safety first
- Unplug before cleaning or moving.
- Sealed-system faults are referral only for an EPA 608 certified technician.
How it works
Nugget ice is made by an auger turning inside a refrigerated cylinder; the scraped flakes are compressed into nuggets as they leave the top.
Melt water from the bin drains back to the reservoir and is frozen again, which is why cleaning and fresh water matter more than on a bullet-ice portable.
GE lists an ambient operating range of 55-90 °F. Its published ice rate (about 1 lb/hour) and time to first ice (about 15 minutes) are at 60 °F water and 70 °F room air; output drops in a hot room.
Needs about 3 in of clearance at the back and sides (0 in on top) for the condenser airflow.
Ring lights on the front report status (making ice, add water, bin full, cleaning). The light meanings are listed under the GE Profile Opal codes in the library.
