Two different KitchenAid 36-inch French doors that techs often confuse because the model numbers look alike. The KRFF507H is the exterior-dispenser model with the ice bin in the left fresh-food door and a full-width FreshChill pantry; its electronic control has a numbered service-test menu (forum techs quote test numbers for the ice maker motor and fill). The KRFF305E has no exterior dispenser: water is dispensed inside the fresh-food section and ice is made in the freezer drawer. Both use the Whirlpool-family single-evaporator, adaptive-defrost layout.

Safety first

  • Unplug before removing panels, ice maker or sensors.
  • Shut off water before opening valve or fill connections.
  • Live tests at the control board are caution work.
  • Sealed refrigerant system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.

How it works

Freezer evaporator and fan supply the freezer, the fresh-food section and (KRFF507H) the in-door ice compartment through ducts and dampers. Sealed-system work is referral only.

KRFF507H ice: freezer air is ducted to the ice maker in the fresh-food section; the ice maker has its own thermistor and the ice room has another. Forum techs report a code E5 when those two readings disagree, which can be a true airflow/temperature problem or a drifting sensor.

KRFF507H fill: a foil heater on the fill tube keeps it from freezing; forum reports show a frozen fill tube clearing after a full power cycle, so power-cycle before replacing parts.

KRFF305E ice: a freezer-mounted ice maker in the drawer, fed by the same bottom-rear water valve; the water dispenser is inside the fresh-food compartment.

Adaptive defrost: heater, bimetal and defrost sensor on the freezer coil; the control times defrost from compressor run time and door openings.

Adaptive defrost control (ADC) board: how to diagnose it

An adaptive defrost board replaces the old cam timer. It counts compressor run time (and on some boards door-open time) and adjusts the next defrost interval based on how long the last one took. Test the heater and the cold bimetal first, then force a defrost: if the heater warms on a forced defrost but the coil still ices, the board isn't starting defrost on its own.

Ice dispenser not dispensing ice (ice maker is making ice)

Most cases are mechanical: cubes fused into a block, a bin not fully seated on the auger drive, or ice behind the auger motor. After that, check the electrical path: door switch, dispenser switch, auger motor voltage and, on crushed/cubed models, the cube solenoid. Water dispensing working is a useful clue that the dispenser control has power.

Refrigerator runs all the time

First decide if it's really a problem. Whirlpool says 40-80% run time is normal at average room temperature, and newer variable-speed compressors are designed to run long at low speed. If it's truly excessive, the usual causes are heat-rejection problems (dirty condenser, dead condenser fan), air leaks (gaskets, doors) and a frosted evaporator. A compressor or refrigerant fault is a referral.
