KitchenAid KDTM404K (KDTM404KPS) dishwasher: quick sheet

Covers: KitchenAid 24 in top-control KDTM404K* (PS = stainless with PrintShield, plus other finishes), sold approx. 2018-2022 (inferred from listing dates; retailers now mark it no longer available). The earlier KDTM404E is a close predecessor.

Cross-checkedBrands: KitchenAid9 components

KitchenAid's popular 44 dBA third-rack unit on the Whirlpool platform: stainless tub, 16 place settings, a FreeFlex third rack with its own spray jets, and ProDry heated drying with a fan. Diagnosis is the same as other Whirlpool-built units (F#E# codes, 1-2-3 diagnostic entry); the extra parts to check are the third-rack water feed and the drying fan.

Safety first

  • Turn off the breaker (or unplug) before removing the toe kick or any panel; a hard-wired unit can still be live at the junction box.
  • Close the hot-water supply valve before touching the inlet valve or supply line.
  • Let the unit cool after a cycle: the heating element, heater housing and water can be hot enough to burn.
  • Sump and filter areas often hold broken glass; wear cut-resistant gloves.
  • Never bypass the float, flood or leak switch to make a unit run; find the source of the water instead.

How it works

Wash: one wash motor supplies the lower arm, a middle arm and the third rack. KitchenAid markets 360° Max Jets on the third rack. The upper rack has to dock with the water feed at the back of the tub or the top spray is weak.

Sensing and cycles: the thermistor/OWI sensor drives the sensor-based cycles. Sani Rinse and heated options use the tub-floor element.

Drying: ProDry uses the element to heat the air and a fan to exhaust moisture. A stainless tub holds heat better than the plastic tub on Whirlpool-branded models.

Filter: manual-clean two-part filter at the back of the tub floor.
