GE GFE28 27.7 cu ft French-door refrigerator with door ice maker (GFE28GYNFS / GFE28GMKES / GFE28GELDS): quick sheet
Covers: GE GFE28G*N / GFE28G*K 36-inch standard-depth French door with external ice and water dispenser: GFE28GYNFS (fingerprint-resistant stainless; parts and filter catalogs list suffixes such as GFE28GYNBFS, NEFS, NFFS, NGFS, NJFS, NKFS), GFE28GMKES (slate) and GFE28GELDS (black slate). Late 2010s to early 2020s; GE's page now says no longer manufactured.
A 27.7 cu ft French door with the ice maker in the left fresh-food door (freeing freezer space), TwinChill separate fresh-food and freezer climates, Turbo Cool/Turbo Freeze and an RPWFE chip filter. An optional second ice maker kit can go in the freezer. Typical calls: door ice maker and dispenser, defrost/frost problems and water filter issues. Not a counter-depth unit.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing covers, fans, heaters or the machine-compartment panel.
- Shut off and bleed the water line before opening valve or ice maker fittings.
- Never chip ice off an evaporator.
- Live fan or board voltage checks are trained-tech work.
- Sealed system (compressor, leaks, recharge) is blocked: protect the food and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
TwinChill: GE describes separate climates for the fresh food and freezer; expect separate evaporator/fan circuits for each section. Confirm the layout and defrost circuits on the tech sheet before diagnosing.
Door ice maker: the ice maker and bin sit in the left fresh-food door and are cooled by cold air brought from the freezer. Door gasket condition and the air path matter as much as the ice maker module.
Dispenser: water passes the valve, the filter and the dispenser; a cubed/crushed ice auger feeds the door chute.
Filter: retail listings name RPWFE (a chip filter) for this model, with some listings also showing XWFE. The chip lets the control track the filter; use the filter type printed on the existing cartridge.
Sealed system: compressor and refrigerant work is referral only.
