Frigidaire FFFC manual-defrost chest freezers (FFFC05 / FFFC07 / FFFC09 / FFFC15 / FFFC20): quick sheet

Covers: Frigidaire FFFC-prefix chest freezers with a mechanical dial and manual defrost: FFFC05M1 / FFFC05M2 (about 5 cu ft), FFFC07M1 (7 cu ft), FFFC09M1 (8.7-9 cu ft), FFFC15M4 (14.8 cu ft), FFFC20M4 (19.8 cu ft) and color/revision suffixes (QW, RW, TW, UW, KW). Most are now discontinued and replaced by the FFCS / FFCL lines. The rating plate is on the cabinet; confirm features by the full model number because lock and basket details change between suffixes.

The basic big-box chest freezer: a static (no fan) cold-wall cabinet, a small hermetic compressor, a mechanical thermostat dial, a power-on light and a defrost drain. There is no defrost heater and no control board, so almost every call is a setting, gasket, airflow, frost or start-component problem. The sides and front get warm when it runs because the condenser tubing is bonded to the inside of the outer skin; that is normal, not a fault. Sealed-system work is EPA 608 territory.

Safety first

  • Unplug before removing the rear access cover; start relay terminals carry line voltage.
  • Compressor, condenser and evaporator tubing are the sealed system: diagnosis only, refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
  • Never chip frost with knives or screwdrivers; a punctured liner can mean a punctured evaporator line.

How it works

The thermostat dial senses cabinet temperature through a capillary bulb and switches the compressor directly. When the cabinet warms past the cut-in point the compressor starts; it stops at the cut-out point. Turning the dial colder lowers both points. Frigidaire manuals say to let the temperature settle several hours between dial changes.

The evaporator is tubing wrapped around the inner liner walls, so the walls themselves are cold. There is no fan inside, which is why the food against the walls freezes fastest and why frost builds on the walls near the lid opening.

The condenser is tubing attached to the inside of the outer cabinet skin (a 'skin' or 'hot-wall' condenser), so heat leaves through the sides and front. GE explains the same layout for chest freezers in general. Sides feel warm while running and can feel cool when the compressor is off.

Defrost is manual: the owner unloads the freezer, unplugs it, lets frost melt and drains the water through the drain plug at the bottom front (on models with a defrost drain). Frost grows faster with frequent lid openings, humid rooms and a leaking lid gasket.

Frigidaire guidance is to let a new or moved unit run about 4 hours before loading unfrozen food, and to add fresh food in limited amounts (about 3 lb per cubic foot at a time) so the compressor is not overwhelmed.
