Chest freezer (manual defrost): field service manual

A top-opening box with a single compressor, a cold-wall evaporator wrapped inside the liner and a skin condenser in the outer walls. No fans and no defrost system on most models, so frost is removed by hand. Recognise it by warm outer walls, a lid gasket, a front or top control and often a drain plug at the bottom front.

Safety first

  • Unplug before service.
  • Do not chip ice with metal tools: you can puncture the liner-side evaporator tubing.
  • Sealed-system work (compressor, leaks, recharge) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician. Many units use flammable R-600a.

How it works

The cold control (thermostat) senses cabinet temperature and switches the compressor on and off. Electronic chest models do the same with a thermistor and board and may add a power light, a running light and a high-temp alarm.

The compressor pushes refrigerant through condenser tubing in the outer walls, which is why the sides feel warm, then through the evaporator tubing behind the inner liner.

Moisture from room air freezes on the liner. When frost reaches about 1/4 inch the unit should be defrosted manually.

Some models have a fast/super-freeze mode that runs the compressor continuously for a period, and convertible units can switch to refrigerator temperatures.
