Whirlpool WZF34X upright freezer (WZF34X20DW / WZF34X18DW): quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool frost-free upright freezers WZF34X20DW (about 19.65-20 cu ft) and the smaller WZF34X18DW, with revision suffixes such as WZF34X20DW01; electronic controls with Fast Freeze and LED lighting (Whirlpool owners page; Lowe's and dealer listings).
High-volume Whirlpool frost-free upright with electronic interior controls and Fast Freeze. Field reports center on a frozen evaporator (failed defrost), weak freezing, and noisy/iced evaporator fans. Some revisions handle defrost electronically without a separate bimetal, which changes the test procedure.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing any cover; the start device, compressor terminals and defrost heater are line voltage.
- Sealed refrigerant system (compressor, condenser coil, evaporator tubing, capillary, refrigerant charge) is BLOCKED: diagnose symptoms only and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician. No brazing, recharging or leak repair.
- Many current units use R-600a (isobutane), a flammable refrigerant: no open flame or sparking tools near the tubing, and ventilate if a leak is suspected.
- Melt ice with a hair dryer on low or warm towels only; never chip ice off an evaporator with a tool.
- Keep food at safe temperature (move it to coolers) during any defrost or repair.
How it works
Compressor and condenser in the bottom rear; evaporator behind the rear interior panel with a fan moving air through the shelves.
The electronic control sets temperature (recommended setting keeps about 0 °F) and schedules defrost. Fast Freeze runs the system harder for a period after loading food.
Meltwater drains to a pan near the compressor; slow evaporation in humid rooms is normal per the owner's manual.
