Upright frost-free freezer: field service manual
Covers: Residential upright freezers with automatic defrost, electronic or mechanical control, including garage-ready uprights (generic platform; confirm model data).
A single-door upright with an evaporator behind a rear interior panel, an evaporator fan that moves air through the cabinet and an automatic defrost system. Electronic models show a temperature display and alarms (PF, high temp, door ajar). Recognise it by the rear air panel and the absence of frost on shelves.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels.
- Live checks are caution work.
- Sealed-system work is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
A cold control or thermistor/board calls for cooling; the compressor and evaporator fan run (and the condenser fan on fan-cooled condensers).
Periodically the control stops cooling and powers a defrost heater on the evaporator. A defrost thermostat (bimetal) is closed when cold and opens once the coil warms, ending heat.
Melt water runs down a drain to a pan near the compressor, where it evaporates.
Electronic models track cabinet temperature and raise a high-temp alarm, a door alarm (often after about 5 minutes) and a power-failure notice.
