Convertible freezers (freezer / refrigerator mode): Midea 2-in-1 uprights, Whirlpool WZCC convertible chest, Frigidaire convertible uprights: quick sheet
Covers: Stand-alone units that switch between freezer and refrigerator mode from the control: Midea 13.8 cu ft 28-in convertible 2-in-1 uprights (MU138 / MRU14 family and Ample 17 cu ft), Whirlpool WZCC5522TW-class convertible chest freezers, and Frigidaire convertible uprights such as FKCH17F7HW.
These units are increasingly common in garages. The mode is chosen at the control, not with a separate part, so 'my freezer is only fridge-cold' is often a mode setting. Garage ratings are mode-dependent: Whirlpool's convertible chest is listed garage-ready 0-110 F in freezer mode, and Midea lists a narrower ambient range in fridge mode (3-43 C) than in freezer mode (-18-43 C).
Safety first
- Unplug before removing panels.
- Sealed-system work is blocked (EPA 608).
How it works
One sealed system and one cabinet sensor serve both modes; the control simply uses a different setpoint band (Midea lists about -11 to 10 F in freezer mode and about 35-46 F in refrigerator mode).
Midea's upright is frost-free (fan and defrost system); Whirlpool's convertible chest is a chest design with a power / on-off indicator light.
In very cold garages a unit in fridge mode can stop running because the cabinet is already cold, which lets contents freeze or warms nothing; the low ambient limits in the spec sheet matter.
Freezer mode costs more to run than fridge mode (one reviewer measured roughly double on a Frigidaire convertible).
