GE garage-ready frost-free upright freezers (FUF14 / FUF17 / FUF21): quick sheet
Covers: GE FUF14, FUF17 and FUF21 no-frost uprights (e.g. FUF21DLRWW, FUF21SMRWW, FUF17SMRWW) marketed as garage ready for 0-110 F ambient. A newer manual covers FUF14/FUF18/FUF22. Confirm on the tech sheet behind the kick plate or in the manual for the revision.
A frost-free upright with an electronic door control (setpoint about -6 to 6 F, high-temp and door-open alarms, Turbo Freeze, control lock, alarm reset) and a keyed door lock. 'Garage ready' means GE tested it to hold temperature in 0-110 F rooms; it is still a forced-air frost-free freezer with a timed or adaptive defrost system.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing interior panels.
- Sealed-system work is blocked (EPA 608).
- Do not use sharp tools or open flames to remove ice.
How it works
The compressor and condenser fan reject heat; an evaporator behind the rear interior panel is cooled and an evaporator fan pushes air through the shelves. The electronic control reads the cabinet sensor against the setpoint.
Periodically the control stops cooling and energizes a defrost heater under the evaporator until the coil is clear; melt water runs down a drain at the bottom of the evaporator area to a pan near the compressor and evaporates. A blocked or frozen drain leaves ice on the freezer floor.
Alarms sound for an open door or rising temperature. Turbo Freeze runs extended cooling for fresh loads. GE advertises up to 48 hours of protection during an outage if the door stays closed.
