Bosch Benchmark B36BT935NS 36-inch built-in bottom-freezer refrigerator: quick sheet
Covers: Bosch Benchmark 36-inch built-in (84 in. tall) bottom-freezer refrigerator B36BT935NS in its production variants (Bosch support lists FD/version suffixes such as /01, /04, /05, /06, /14, /17, /18, /20). Bosch lists the model as no longer available, so parts and the variant suffix matter. Benchmark column refrigerators and the counter-depth freestanding Bosch French-door models are different platforms. Read the rating label inside the fresh-food compartment for model, FD number and serial.
A stainless built-in (not panel-ready) bottom-freezer with separate compressors for the refrigerator and freezer, so a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer is a separate system problem, not an airflow damper problem. It runs on a 120 V, 15 A supply, has an automatic ice maker (Bosch lists about 2.9 lb per 24 h and 7 lb storage), an UltraClarityPro water filter, a door alarm, Sabbath mode and Home Connect Wi-Fi. Bosch's public guidance on displayed 'E' codes is generic (electronics detected a fault: power off, wait, power on, call service if it returns); third-party code lists for Bosch refrigerators disagree on numbering, so treat any code as a pointer and test the part.
Safety first
- Unplug or turn off the breaker before removing panels; the machine compartment has 120 V and fans that start automatically.
- Sealed-system work (compressors, leaks, recharge) is blocked here: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician; confirm the refrigerant on the rating label first.
- Built-in units are anchored and heavy: do not pull from the opening without the installation guide and a helper.
How it works
Two sealed systems: Bosch lists dual compressors for fridge and freezer, and the spec sheet lists dual evaporators. Each compartment has its own evaporator and fan, and the control runs each system to its own sensor. A single warm compartment points at that compartment's fan, defrost or sensor, or at that system's compressor.
Condenser cooling: built-in units of this type breathe through the front toe grille, with the machine compartment low in the cabinet (confirm the layout for the FD version in the installation guide), and a condenser fan moving air across the condenser. Blocked or dusty grilles raise run time and can make one or both compartments warm.
Defrost: each evaporator is defrosted by a heater; a defrost failure frosts the coil, the fan blade starts to tick on ice and airflow drops. Repair-site reports name iced evaporators and evaporator fan failures as the common warm-compartment causes on Bosch refrigerators.
Electronics: the control reads compartment sensors and shows temperatures and alarms on the display. A temperature alarm (beeping, warning symbol) is not necessarily a fault code; an 'E' code means the electronics detected a fault (Bosch France guidance). Third-party sites assign E1/E2/E01/E02 to specific sensors but disagree.
Ice and water: a water valve feeds the dispenser and ice maker through the filter; BSH troubleshooting (Thermador's refrigeration page) lists filter seating, a closed shut-off valve and kinked lines as the first checks for low water flow.
