Aprilaire E-series whole-home dehumidifiers (E070 / E080 / E100 / E130) and 1800-series: quick sheet
Covers: Aprilaire E-series ducted / freestanding whole-home and crawlspace dehumidifiers (E070, E080, E100, E130 families with C/T/CS/CZ/D suffixes) and the older 1830 / 1850 / 1870 units, which use a similar E-code display with SERVICE REQUIRED.
Common in basements and crawlspaces installed by HVAC contractors. The unit shows E-codes with a SERVICE REQUIRED message; several codes are airflow or setting problems rather than failed parts, and E8 is purely an air-condition limit that clears itself. Aprilaire says troubleshooting with covers off should be done by qualified HVAC technicians because of 120 V hazards.
Safety first
- Unplug before opening covers.
- Internal tests are 120 V caution work for qualified techs.
- Sealed-system work is blocked (EPA 608).
How it works
A compressor and fan pull air across a cold evaporator; water drains by gravity through the drain hose (10 ft hose included on many E-series units) or to a pump.
The unit only dehumidifies when incoming air is about 50-140 F with a dew point of at least 40 F; outside that it shows E8 and waits.
A discharge-line temperature sensor protects the compressor (E2 on 1800-series when the line exceeds about 190 F; usually hot inlet air over about 100 F or very low airflow). It self-resets unless it repeats on five consecutive starts.
A float switch safety (E7) stops the unit when the condensate cannot drain; units without a float use a jumper on those terminals.
