LG top-load direct-drive washer: field service manual
Covers: LG WT-series top-loaders with direct-drive motor under the tub and impeller or agitator (series names only).
LG top-loaders mount the rotor and stator under the outer tub on the drive shaft, with a clutch (coupling) that lets the motor turn only the impeller for wash or the impeller and basket together for spin. The control reads speed from a hall sensor on the stator, so the LE/hall diagnostics carry over from the front-load platform. A lid lock holds the lid closed during spin.
Safety first
- Unplug and wait several minutes before touching motor leads.
- Never probe motor phase wires with power on.
- Drain the tub before laying the washer down.
How it works
Start: lid switch must report closed; lid-lock models lock before agitation or spin (dE/dE1/dE2 for lid faults).
Load sensing: the board turns the dry load briefly to estimate size and picks the water level.
Fill: valves admit water; the pressure sensor reports level (IE if no rise, FE if overfilled).
Wash: the clutch couples the motor to the impeller only; the motor reverses to roll the load.
Shift: the clutch actuator moves the coupling into spin before draining; a shift fault is reported on some models as E6 (meaning varies by model; confirm in the model's code list).
Drain and spin: the pump drains, then basket speed ramps while the board checks for imbalance (UE) and stops if it cannot balance.
Lid release: after the basket stops.
