LG front-load direct-drive washer: field service manual
Covers: LG WM-series front-loaders with direct-drive (rotor/stator) motor, roughly 2004 onward.
LG front-loaders bolt the motor rotor directly to the drum shaft at the back of the tub, with no belt. The main board drives the stator and reads rotor position from a hall sensor mounted on the stator. The motor-related LE (locked motor) code is the signature fault of this platform, and the hall sensor has published test values that agree across sources.
Safety first
- Unplug and wait several minutes before touching motor leads: the motor phase lines are driven at high DC voltage by the board.
- Never measure voltage on the motor phase wires; take only hall-sensor voltage readings with power on.
- Keep fingers clear of the rotor when turning it by hand during live hall checks; do not press Start.
How it works
Start: the board checks the door switch and locks the door; a lock failure shows dE/dE1/dE2.
Load sensing: the drum is turned dry to estimate load before filling.
Fill: inlet valve solenoids admit water through the dispenser. The pressure sensor (frequency output) tells the board the level; no rise in time gives IE, overfill gives FE.
Wash: the drum tumbles in alternating directions; on heater models a heater and thermistor control temperature (tE for sensor faults).
Drain: the pump at the front-bottom runs; slow drain gives OE.
Balance and spin: the board ramps speed in steps and reads speed ripple from the hall sensor to judge imbalance. It redistributes and retries; if it cannot balance it shows UE and spins slowly or not at all.
Motor monitoring: if the hall sensor does not report rotation when the motor is driven, the board shows LE; motor over-current shows CE.
Door release: after the drum stops and level is low, the lock releases.
