Control board diagnosis method: power in, inputs, outputs, relays and ribbon cables
Covers: Electronic main boards and relay boards in US washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges and HVAC equipment; a brand-neutral method. Inverter and high-voltage boards are covered in their own references
Boards are the most expensive and most often wrongly replaced part. A board is only bad when it has good power, good inputs and a missing or wrong output. This method walks from supply to inputs to outputs and checks the wiring between them, so you condemn a board on proof instead of a hunch.
Safety first
- Live measurements on boards are caution steps: insulated back-probes, never bridge adjacent pins, keep one hand clear
- Unplug before unplugging or reseating connectors
- High-voltage and inverter boards (microwave, induction, inverter compressor) have separate rules; do not apply this method blindly
How it works
A board takes line power, makes low-voltage DC for its logic (often 5 V and 12 V), reads inputs (switches, sensors, user keys) and drives outputs (relays, triacs, motor drivers) according to its program. Faults appear in any of those four places, or in the wiring between them.
Inputs often depend on the board: thermistors and pressure sensors need a reference voltage from the board, so a dead input can mean a missing supply rail rather than a bad sensor.
Outputs are only expected during the matching step of the cycle. Use the service/test mode to command a load, then measure at the board connector: voltage present means the board did its job and the problem is the wiring or the load.
A shorted or low-resistance load can burn a relay or output trace. Before installing a new board, check the load it drives so the new board is not damaged the same way.
Ribbon cables and multi-pin connectors fail by corrosion, fretting and heat. Many 'board' faults are cured by reseating or replacing the connector or harness.
