Amana top-load washer, dryer and top-freezer refrigerator: what differs from Whirlpool
Covers: Current Amana-badged laundry and top-freezer refrigerators sold by Whirlpool Corporation (e.g. NTW-series top-load washers, NED/NGD-series 29 in dryers, Amana top-mount refrigerators). Older pre-Whirlpool Amana products (before the Maytag/Whirlpool era) are different designs and are not covered.
Today's Amana is Whirlpool's value badge. Amana top-load washers such as the NTW4516 are built on Whirlpool's vertical modular washer family: knob console, electronic control with F/E codes, lid lock, belt-driven motor with a gearcase and drain pump. Amana dryers use the Whirlpool 29 in dryer platform and the same thermal cut-off parts. Amana top-freezers follow the conventional Whirlpool top-mount design. In practice you service an Amana with the Whirlpool platform manuals; the differences are mostly fewer features and a knob-only console, which changes how you enter diagnostics.
Safety first
- Unplug before opening any panel.
- Keep hands out of the basket during manual spin tests; some guides bypass the lid lock for testing, which removes the spin safety.
- Refrigerator sealed system: diagnose only; refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
How it works
Washer (NTW-type): the control locks the lid (some models lock right away, others only after the wash portion starts), fills by pressure sensing, agitates through the belt-driven gearcase, drains with a separate pump and spins. Codes follow Whirlpool VMW F/E formatting and are read through console lamps, not a numeric display.
Washer diagnostics on knob consoles: the diagnostic mode is opened by a pattern of knob clicks right after resetting the knob, and stored codes are shown as lamp patterns (a lit 'Sensing/Fill' lamp marks an F code, the other lamps give the digits). A calibration routine should be run after replacing the control, shifter/actuator or lid lock.
Dryer: same airflow, heater, thermal fuse/high-limit and belt/idler layout as the Whirlpool 29 in dryer; see whirlpool-maytag-kenmore-29-dryer.
Top-freezer refrigerator: single evaporator in the freezer with a fan pushing air to the fresh-food section through a damper/control; automatic defrost by heater, defrost terminator and timer or control. See top-mount-refrigerator-defrost-timer-check.
