Whole-house ducted dehumidifier (Aprilaire / Santa Fe class): electrical and airflow field manual
Covers: Plug-in 120 V whole-house dehumidifiers installed in basements, crawlspaces or attics and ducted stand-alone or to the HVAC system. Detailed values come from Aprilaire's 1830/1850/1870 troubleshooting manual; Santa Fe units follow the same principles but have their own documents. Electrical and airflow side only; the refrigeration circuit is out of scope.
These units are larger, ducted versions of a portable dehumidifier with a filter, an internal control board and user interface, a run-capacitor compressor and fan, a condensate drain with running trap, and an outlet flap damper. Most service calls are airflow (filter, duct, damper), drainage, sensor/control codes or installation conditions, which can be handled in the field. Refrigerant faults lead to unit replacement or factory service.
Safety first
- Aprilaire states troubleshooting must be done by a qualified HVAC service person: 120 V inside the cabinet can kill. Live voltage checks are caution steps.
- Discharge capacitors before testing
- Do not open or repair the refrigeration circuit (EPA 608); refer or replace
- Electrical supply problems (shared or undersized circuit) go to a licensed electrician
How it works
A wall control or the unit's own interface calls for dehumidification. The fan starts first (Aprilaire runs it about 3 minutes to sample air), then the compressor if inlet conditions are in range.
Inlet air temperature and dew point are checked before the compressor starts; outside the allowed window the unit posts E8 and waits.
Thermistors on the refrigeration lines watch for frost and high discharge temperature; defrost stops the compressor when the coil is near freezing for a set time.
Condensate drains by gravity through a running trap to a drain; the tube must slope downhill all the way with no second trap.
Ducting options include return-to-return or return-to-supply on the HVAC system, or dedicated ducts; the inlet must never come from the HVAC supply side.
