Portable dehumidifier: field service manual
Covers: Portable 120 V compressor dehumidifiers (roughly 20-70 pint class) with bucket, gravity-drain and built-in pump options. Many brands share Midea, Gree or similar platforms, so code sets overlap; always confirm in the model manual.
A portable dehumidifier is a small refrigeration system in one cabinet: a fan pulls room air across a cold evaporator coil where moisture condenses, then across the hot condenser and back into the room slightly warmer and drier. Water drains to a bucket, a hose or a pump. Field repairs are limited to airflow, drainage, sensors, fan and controls; sealed-system failures are not serviceable in the field and most such units are replaced.
Safety first
- Unplug before opening; live checks at the board are caution steps
- Never open, braze, recharge or vent the refrigerant circuit (EPA 608). Diagnose, then refer or recommend replacement.
- Some newer units use refrigerants that require special tools and procedures; check the rating plate and keep ignition sources away from a suspected leak
- Unplug before stepping into standing water around the unit
How it works
The control compares the humidity sensor reading with the setpoint. On a call it starts the fan, then the compressor after a protection delay (often around 3 minutes after a stop).
Moisture condenses on the evaporator coil and drips into a pan that feeds the bucket, a gravity drain port or a small pump.
A coil temperature sensor watches for frost. When frost builds, the compressor stops and the fan keeps running until the coil clears (auto defrost).
A float and switch (or magnet and reed switch) stop the compressor when the bucket is full or removed; pump models run the pump when water reaches a level.
At setpoint the compressor stops; on many units the fan runs on for a few minutes and may then stop or keep sampling air.
