Wall ovens (single, double, convection): field service manual
Covers: Built-in electric single and double wall ovens and oven/microwave combos (oven section), all major US brands, with self-clean, convection (fan with or without a third element), cooling fan and electronic controls.
Wall ovens share the same heating parts as a range oven but pack them into a cabinet cut-out, so heat management matters more: a cooling fan moves air over the control and out the vent, and a failed fan often shows as a dead control or a blown thermal fuse after self-clean. Most service needs the oven pulled partly out of the cabinet. Double ovens have two independent sensors, locks and element sets on one control.
Safety first
- Turn off the oven breaker before any panel removal; wall ovens are hard-wired
- Wall ovens are heavy; use two people or a lift and remove doors first
- Live 120/240 V checks are for trained technicians only
- Never force a locked door while the oven is hot
How it works
Bake and broil work as on a range: the control reads an RTD sensor (about 1,080-1,100 ohms at room temperature) and cycles the elements through relays at 240 V.
True (European) convection adds a ring element around a rear fan; the fan pushes heated air through the cavity. Convection modes often auto-reduce the set temperature (LG cites 25°F). Plain convection uses only the fan with the bake/broil elements.
The cooling fan runs on 120 V whenever the oven is hot and may keep running after cooking ends until internal parts cool down; that is normal.
Self-clean: the control drives the lock motor first and waits for the lock switch to confirm before heating to clean temperature. After the cycle the door stays locked until the cavity drops below the unlock threshold (about 500-550°F depending on design).
Double ovens: each cavity has its own sensor and lock; usually only one cavity can self-clean at a time, and fault codes are often split upper/lower (for example LG F-10 upper, F-20 lower).
