Samsung side-by-side refrigerator: field service manual
Covers: RS-series and RH (Food Showcase) side-by-side models with a through-the-door dispenser and an ice maker in the freezer or an upper-freezer-door ice compartment, roughly 2008-2024
Samsung side-by-sides come in two styles: full-depth units with Twin Cooling (separate fridge and freezer evaporators) and simpler single-evaporator units that move cold air from the freezer to the fridge. The dispenser sits in the freezer door. Common calls are ice maker and dispenser problems, freezer-coil icing, frozen water lines and fan or sensor codes.
Safety first
- Unplug the unit before service, and allow inverter boards to discharge.
- Live checks need insulated probes and one hand away from the cabinet.
- The sealed system is blocked work: diagnose and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician.
- R-600a units: if you smell refrigerant, ventilate and avoid sparks.
How it works
The basic refrigeration loop matches other Samsung units: compressor and condenser in the bottom rear compartment, with the evaporator(s) behind the rear panels. The sealed side is not field-serviceable without EPA 608 certification.
On Twin Cooling side-by-sides, each section has its own evaporator and fan, and the board directs refrigerant to whichever section needs cooling. On single-evaporator units, the freezer evaporator does all the cooling and the board opens an air damper or runs a fan to push cold air into the fridge.
Defrost is board-controlled and adaptive: the board tracks compressor run time and door openings, then energizes the heater until the defrost sensor says the coil is clear. A bimetal safety is wired in series. The melt water drains to the pan below.
The ice maker is either on the freezer ceiling with an auger and dispensing chute, or in a compartment in the upper freezer door. The water supply runs through the door hinge, so a freezer set too cold or a kinked line at the hinge can freeze it.
