Whirlpool WZC manual-defrost chest freezers (WZC3115D / WZC3122D / WZC5415D / WZC5422D): quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool white chest freezers with a numbered dial control and manual defrost: WZC3115DW and WZC5415DW (14.8 cu ft class, about 47-3/8 in. wide) and WZC3122DW and WZC5422DW (21.7 cu ft class, about 66-1/4 in. wide). Whirlpool's dimension guide that groups these four is dated 2014; the WZC5415DW user guide (W11320196A) is from about 2019. Several are discontinued. The model and serial label is inside the freezer (Whirlpool user guide). Convertible WZC5216LW / WZCC models switch to refrigerator mode and are covered on the convertible-freezer sheet, not here. WZC3209 was not found in any source we could use and is not covered. Basic static chest freezers: a compressor in the rear machine compartment, a cold plate wrapped around the liner and a condenser that warms the cabinet skin. There is no fan, no defrost heater and no control board on the basic versions, so most no-cool calls come down to power, the dial (cold control), the lid seal, frost load or the compressor start parts. Some versions add a power indicator light, a temperature alarm switch, a key lock and an incandescent interior light.
Safety first
- Unplug before servicing, cleaning or changing the bulb; turning the dial to 0 stops cooling but does not remove power from the cabinet.
- Plug into a grounded 3-prong outlet; no adapter, no extension cord.
- No sharp tools on frost: they can puncture the liner and the refrigerant tubing behind it. Newer freezers may use flammable refrigerant; check the rating label.
- Sealed-system work (leak search, compressor, recharge) is for EPA 608 certified technicians only.
- Before scrapping an old freezer remove the lid (child entrapment); refrigerant must be recovered by a certified technician.
- Two or more people to move the freezer.
How it works
The dial is a cold control (thermostat) with a sensing tube on the liner. When the cabinet warms past the set point the contacts close and the compressor runs; when it cools they open. Position 0 is off / defrost.
The compressor pumps refrigerant through the condenser tubing behind the outer skin, which is why the cabinet sides feel warm. Whirlpool and GE both describe a warm exterior as normal for chest freezers.
The evaporator tubing is bonded to the inner liner walls. Frost builds on those walls from lid openings and humid air; a thick layer insulates the walls and makes the compressor run longer.
Defrosting is manual: switch off, open the lid, and drain the melt water out through the drain hole in the floor using the cap, plug and hose adapter Whirlpool supplies.
After a cold start the compressor runs constantly until the cabinet is down to temperature; Whirlpool gives 6 to 8 hours or longer before loading frozen food.
