Insignia freezers: NS-CZ chest (manual defrost, garage ready) and NS-UZ17 / NS-UZ21 upright convertible: quick sheet
Covers: Insignia (Best Buy house brand) freezers: NS-CZ50WH0 and NS-CZ70WH0 chest freezers (5 and 7 cu ft, garage ready; earlier NS-CZ35WH7 / CZ50WH6 / CZ70WH6 / CZ10WH6 generation is similar) and the NS-UZ17WH0, NS-UZ17SS0 and NS-UZ21WH0 (-C = Canada) upright convertible freezer/refrigerators (17 and about 21 cu ft, electronic control). Wi-Fi versions NS-UZ17XWH7 / NS-UZ21XWH7 also exist.
Two very different machines under one badge. The chest freezers are simple: mechanical thermostat, manual defrost with a drain plug, and a garage-ready rating. The uprights are electronic, frost-free, can run as a freezer or a refrigerator, and show sensor fault codes. Calls are frost and door-seal problems on the chests and sensor or defrost faults on the uprights.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing control covers or interior panels.
- Never chip ice with metal tools; a punctured cold wall or coil ends the freezer.
- Sealed-system work (compressor, leak, recharge, brazing) is blocked: refer to an EPA 608-certified technician; check the refrigerant type on the rating plate (hydrocarbon units are flammable).
- Insignia says owner repairs void the warranty: check warranty status before opening a newer unit.
How it works
Chest (NS-CZ): mechanical dial thermostat with an OFF position, cold-wall evaporator, manual defrost. The user guide says to defrost when frost passes about 0.2-0.4 in (5-10 mm): food out, dial OFF, unplug, pull the drain plug, pan or hose under the drain. No boiling water and no metal scrapers.
Chest garage-ready rating in the official guide is 0-110 F ambient. After a power cut, wait 3-5 minutes before restarting or the compressor will not start.
Upright (NS-UZ): electronic control with a temperature sensor, a defrost (evaporator) sensor and an ambient sensor; frost-free defrost; mode can be set to freezer or refrigerator. The guide allows about 4 hours to cool down after being unplugged or restarted.
Upright fault codes in the user guide are sensor faults: E2 temperature sensor, E5 defrost sensor, E7 ambient sensor, all 'call for service'. Third-party code sites give other meanings for E7; trust the guide.
