Static chest freezers with LED lighting, a pop-out key lock, casters and a two-part defrost drain. The 14.8 cu ft FFCL1542AW uses a knob on the right outside wall; the 19.8 and 24.9 cu ft models use a side-mounted digital panel with Temp and Freeze Boost buttons, a High Temp alert and one published fault code (E2, temperature sensor). The newest FFCL2562AW adds a refrigerator mode.

Safety first

Flammable refrigerant (R-600a): no mechanical defrost tools, do not puncture tubing, no flames; sealed-system work only by EPA 608 certified technicians with flammable-refrigerant equipment.
Unplug before cleaning, defrosting or changing parts; the control OFF position does not remove all power.
Dedicated grounded 115 V outlet; no extension cord, no 2-prong adapter.
Two people to tip or move the freezer.
Keep keys away from children; remove the lid before disposal.

How it works

On the digital models the control board reads a cabinet temperature sensor and runs the compressor to hold the set point. Pressing Temp steps the setting from 10 F down to -11 F (the FFCL2542AW manual shows 10, 8, 7 ... 0 ... -9, -10, -11 F).

Freeze Boost runs the cabinet at the coldest point (display shows -11 F, or Fb on the FFCL2562AW) to freeze a fresh load faster; it is not remembered after a power failure.

If the cabinet rises above the set point the display shows High Temp (HI on the FFCL2562AW). E2 means the control has lost its temperature sensor reading.

The FFCL2562AW can run as a refrigerator (32 to 50 F): hold Freeze Boost and Temp together for 5 seconds to switch, then empty and dry it and allow 6 to 24 hours to settle.

Defrost is manual: an inside floor plug and an outside drain plug let melt water out into a pan.

Frost inside food packages and freezer-burned food: is the freezer failing?

Freezer burn is moisture leaving the food's surface and refreezing as frost inside the package. It is a quality problem, not a safety one, and it is driven by air in the package, long storage and temperature swings. A tech's job is to separate normal packaging and storage causes from a freezer that is actually running warm or cycling wide: measure the temperature, check the door seal and the defrost behavior, and then advise on storage.

Frost-free upright freezer: ice sheet on the freezer floor (defrost drain)

Defrost melt water is not reaching the drain pan, so it refreezes on the floor. The drain under the evaporator is clogged with debris or frozen shut, a drain heater/clip is missing or failed, or the liner is warped so water pools away from the hole.

Chest or upright freezer cabinet sides feel hot

On most chest freezers and many uprights the condenser tubing is bonded inside the outer walls, so warm sides are normal and keep the cabinet from sweating. It only matters if the warmth is extreme with poor cooling, or the unit runs constantly; then check clearance, ambient temperature, the door seal and any external condenser.

Whirlpool white chest freezers with a numbered dial control and manual defrost: WZC3115DW and WZC5415DW (14.8 cu ft class, about 47-3/8 in. wide) and WZC3122DW and WZC5422DW (21.7 cu ft class, about 66-1/4 in. wide). Whirlpool's dimension guide that groups these four is dated 2014; the WZC5415DW user guide (W11320196A) is from about 2019. Several are discontinued.
