Whirlpool WTW6157P-series top-load washer with 2-in-1 removable agitator: quick sheet

Covers: Whirlpool WTW6157P** (WTW6157PW white, WTW6157PB Volcano Black; first engineering revision WTW6157PW0 seen in parts listings). ENERGY STAR lists it as available on the market from May 2023 (the 'P' letter is the 2023 model-year code in Whirlpool numbering). 5.3 cu ft US (DOE) class, about 6.1 cu ft IEC in Canada. The smaller WTW5057L** also carries a 2-in-1 removable agitator but differs in capacity (about 4.7-4.8 cu ft) and listed spin (about 770 rpm), and our sources do not confirm the two share the same agitator parts, so it is NOT covered here.

Single sourceBrands: Whirlpool8 components

A 27 in HE top-loader whose main selling point is a two-piece agitator: leave the agitator post in for an agitator wash, or lift it out and wash on the smooth impeller base for bulky items. It adds a Deep Water Wash option, a full-width slow-close glass lid with a lid lock and a smooth spiral stainless basket. It is a different generation from the WTW5000D and WTW4816F/WTW4955H sheets: start any agitator complaint by checking that the post is seated correctly, because a half-seated or missing post changes how the machine washes and sounds. Fault-code meanings and the full test list: see the Whirlpool / Maytag top-load washer field service manual and the tech sheet in this unit.

Safety first

  • Unplug the washer before removing any panel or tipping the cabinet; it runs on 120 V.
  • Make live voltage checks only when the test requires it, with insulated probes and one hand clear.
  • Shut off and disconnect both water supplies and drain the tub before tipping the washer back.
  • Never defeat the lid lock; a spinning basket can cause serious injury.
  • The washer weighs well over 100 lb; tip it with two people.

How it works

At cycle start the control locks the lid, senses the load by moving the dry basket, then fills to a low HE level, or to a higher level when Deep Water Wash or the Bulky Items cycle (deepest level only) is chosen. A pressure sensor on a small air hose reports the water level to the control.

During wash the drive turns only the wash base. With the agitator post installed, the post rides on the base and gives a traditional agitator action that helps break down loose soil; with the post removed, the smooth impeller base rolls clothes through the water and leaves room for bulky items. For spin the drive couples the basket and spins it to remove water while the drain pump runs.

Drive type is the point to confirm before ordering parts: one retailer spec sheet lists a direct drive with a 9/10 HP motor, while parts listings for WTW6157PW0 show a clutch and an electric clutch actuator, which matches the belt-and-clutch layout repair notes describe on the related WTW5057 family. Read the tech sheet and the parts diagram for the exact model and revision before condemning a motor, belt or clutch.

The machine runs on a 120 V, 60 Hz grounded outlet. It has no internal water heater, so wash temperature depends on the household hot-water supply; the control blends hot and cold to reach the chosen temperature setting.

Whirlpool family washers & dryers: reading F#E# codes, Service Diagnostic Mode and fault history

Whirlpool-family electronic laundry stores its last few faults as a pair: the F number names the system and the E number names the suspect part. Most knob-and-button consoles reach Service Diagnostic Mode by pressing three buttons in a set order three times in a row within a few seconds; newer touch consoles use a different entry. The exact buttons are on the tech sheet hidden in the console, so read it first and never guess.

Samsung washers & dryers: display codes vs information codes, SmartThings and Smart Care, and service-mode code history

Samsung splits codes into information codes (a user or installation condition such as swapped hot and cold hoses or an unlatched door) and real error codes. The same fault may read differently by generation: older machines used E-numbers or 4E-style codes, newer ones 4C-style, some top-loaders nF. Wi-Fi models push codes to SmartThings when they happen; Smart Care is a separate camera-based check that only reads its own test, not real codes. Many models also keep a stored-code list in a service mode whose buttons vary by model.

Washer routine service: tub-clean cycle, door boot, dispenser, pump filter and hoses (front and top load)

All the major brands build in a cleaning cycle and remind the user about once a month or every 20-40 loads: Whirlpool about every 30 cycles, LG after about 30 cycles ('tcL'), Samsung after 40 washes on front-loaders and 20 on top-loaders. A pro service adds what the cycle misses: the door boot, dispenser, drain pump filter on front-loaders and a hose inspection.
