Maytag Pet Pro MVW6500M washer and MED6500M / MGD6500M dryer pair: quick sheet
Covers: Maytag Pet Pro System launched August 2022: washer MVW6500M** (MVW6500MW white, MVW6500MBK Volcano Black), electric dryer MED6500M** (YMED6500MW in Canada) and gas dryer MGD6500M**. The 'M' letter is the 2022 model-year code. Not found in the ENERGY STAR washer or dryer lists. Maytag later added front-load Pet Pro models (per a 2025 Maytag release); those are not covered here.
A 27.5 in agitator top-loader and a 29 in, 7.0 cu ft dryer sold as a pair for pet households. The washer's Pet Pro option adds water and a deep rinse so loose hair is carried into a built-in Pet Pro Filter in the agitator post; the dryer's Pet Pro option is a long no-heat tumble that sends hair to an extra-large lint screen. Mechanically the washer is a belt-drive agitator machine and the dryer is a standard 29 in Whirlpool-family dryer, so most repairs follow the platform manuals: Whirlpool / Maytag top-load washer and Whirlpool / Maytag / Kenmore 29 in dryer. Gas valve and burner work on the MGD6500 is blocked in this library.
Safety first
- The electric dryer uses a 240 V, 30 A circuit: unplug and verify dead before any test inside the cabinet; live tests are caution only.
- Gas dryer (MGD6500): no work on the gas valve, burner or gas line. If you smell gas, shut off the supply, do not operate switches, ventilate and call the gas utility or a licensed gas technician.
- A lint- or hair-clogged vent is a fire risk; clear the full run, not only the screen.
- Unplug the washer before tipping it; drain it first.
- Never bypass the washer lid lock or the dryer thermal fuse.
How it works
Washer: fills to a sensed or selected level (a Deep Fill option and a built-in faucet are listed by Maytag), agitates with the drive turning the agitator, then the drive couples the basket for spin up to about 750 rpm. With the Pet Pro option the control uses more water and an added deep rinse; water moving through the agitator post carries loose hair into the Pet Pro Filter, where it stays visible until cleaned.
Dryer: a drum turned by a belt from a 1/3 HP motor; air is pulled through the drum, out through the lint screen and the rear exhaust. On the MED6500 the heat comes from a 240 V element; on the MGD6500 from a gas burner. Two sensors track moisture and air temperature and end the cycle when dry. The Pet Pro option runs a no-heat, extended tumble so hair releases into the XL lint screen at the top of the dryer.
Because Pet Pro sends far more hair to the filter, the lint screen and the dryer exhaust, many service calls on this pair are really clogged filters, drains and vents. Check those before parts.
