Whirlpool WMH31017 over-the-range microwave: quick sheet
Covers: Whirlpool WMH31017 1.7 cu. ft. over-the-range microwave-hood combinations across the A, F and H generations (e.g. WMH31017AW, WMH31017FS, WMH31017HS/HZ/HW/HB; Canadian YWMH31017HS). Approx. 2011-2024 (inferred from model revisions listed by parts sites).
Whirlpool's volume OTR: transformer-type, 1,000 W cooking power, 300 CFM two-speed vent, electronic touch controls. Classic failures are door interlock switches (often together with a blown fuse), keypad codes (F2/F2E1), vent fan problems and no-heat faults in the HV section.
Safety first
- CAUTION: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the microwave is unplugged. Unplug, wait, then discharge the capacitor through an insulated discharge tool before touching anything in the HV section (transformer, diode, capacitor, magnetron).
- Never run the oven with the outer wrapper off or with an interlock defeated, and never take live readings in the HV circuit.
- After any door, hinge, interlock or waveguide work, check that the door closes squarely and test for microwave leakage with a leakage meter before returning the unit to service.
- An OTR unit is heavy and hangs from a wall plate and top-cabinet bolts: use two people and support it while removing or installing the top bolts.
How it works
Same transformer/voltage-doubler design as other non-inverter OTRs: line fuse and door interlocks feed the cook relay, which powers the HV transformer, capacitor, diode and magnetron.
The door operates three switches (two mounted one way, one the other in the latch assembly). If a switch fails closed, the monitor switch shorts the line and blows the fuse, so a dead unit after a door slam usually means a switch plus a fuse.
Codes follow Whirlpool's OTR list: F2/F2E1 and E03 point at the keypad, F1E1 at the control's relay functions, E21/E22 at the thermal (vent) sensor, and F3C/F3T4-type codes at thermistors on models that have them.
Vent fan and cooktop light are independent of the cook circuit; the thermal sensor can start the fan automatically when the range below runs hot.
