Whirlpool's high-volume 29-inch top-console electric dryers sold as pairs with the WTW4816F/WTW4955H-type washers. Classic Whirlpool 29-inch cabinet: rear heater housing, thermal fuse on the blower housing, belt with idler, front glides and rear rollers. No-heat, belt and roller noise are the usual calls. Deep diagnostics: see the Whirlpool / Maytag / Kenmore 29-inch dryer field service manual.
Safety first
- Electric dryer: 240 V. Unplug (or kill the 30 A breaker) before any panel comes off; the element circuit can still be live with the drum stopped.
- Never bypass the thermal fuse, thermal cutoff or high-limit, even for a test run.
- A blown thermal fuse is a symptom: always inspect and clean the full exhaust run before returning the dryer to service.
How it works
The motor turns the drum by belt and runs the blower; once up to speed its centrifugal switch closes so the heat circuit can energize.
The control cycles the element using the exhaust thermistor; AutoDry-type cycles end when the moisture bars no longer see wet clothes.
Thermal fuse, thermal cutoff and high-limit protect against overheating, almost always caused by restricted exhaust.
