Whirlpool Cabrio and Maytag Bravos HE top-load washers (late 2000s to mid 2010s): quick sheet
Covers: First- and second-generation Whirlpool Cabrio (WTW5xxx/WTW6xxx/WTW7xxx, e.g. WTW5600X, WTW5700X, WTW6300, WTW6800) and Maytag Bravos / Bravos X / Bravos XL (MVWB and MVWX, e.g. MVWX500, MVWX700, MVWB750, MVWB850) impeller or low-profile-agitator HE top-loads. Whirlpool press releases show Bravos MVWX700/MVWX500 announced in April 2010 for July 2010 sale, Bravos XL in 2011, and several Cabrio models already on sale and ranked by January 2011; earlier Bravos units date to about 2007. Kenmore Oasis HE top-loads are the Sears version of the same family. Exact years per model: read the serial on the tech sheet.
These are the high-volume HE top-loads techs still meet every week. Cabrio and Bravos share the same service logic: the same three-press diagnostic entry, the same automatic test steps and the same motor, shift and lid-lock layout, so one routine covers both badges. The usual calls are no spin or F7 E1 (shift actuator or motor speed sensing), lid-lock faults, long drain and long fill, unbalanced loads from worn suspension rods, and 'not enough water' complaints that are actually normal HE behavior. For the generic VMW platform background see the Whirlpool/Maytag top-load washer sheet; this sheet is the field shortcut for the Cabrio and Bravos generations.
Safety first
- Diagnostic modes run with the washer plugged in and bypass some safety logic: keep hands out of the basket and away from moving parts.
- Unplug before removing the console, top, shield or any harness.
- Shut the faucets and drain the tub before laying the washer down.
- Two people to lay down and lift the cabinet.
How it works
Low-water wash: the basket floats and disengages from the hub during the fill test, then reengages as water drains. A customer saying it 'barely fills' is usually describing normal HE operation, not a fault.
A board-driven motor turns the impeller or agitator, and a shift actuator moves the drive between agitate and spin. When the actuator fails, the washer agitates but won't spin, or stops with F7 E1. Repair shops describe the actuator and the motor-speed sensing as the two predictable failure points on this family.
The motor stator carries three rotor position sensors (RPS); the automatic test spins the basket slowly at about 23 rpm (step C0) to prove the motor and sensors.
A lid lock holds the lid during spin. Lid codes (LdL/LdU on Maytag displays, F5 family on Whirlpool) are often debris, detergent on the lock, or something heavy sitting on the lid before they are a failed lock.
Water level is read by a pressure system; hoses reversed is flagged as HC at the end of the cycle on Maytag HE top-loads.
