Vizio V-Series and M-Series Quantum (2020-2023): quick sheet
Covers: Vizio V-Series 4K (e.g. V655-J09, 2021 'J' year) and M-Series Quantum (e.g. M65Q7-J01, 2021; 30 local dimming zones on 65 in). Year letter in the model: H = 2020, J = 2021, K = 2022, M = 2023 (Vizio M65Q7-J01 page; spec listings).
Vizio's volume lines: V-Series is direct-lit with no or minimal dimming; M-Series Quantum adds quantum dot and a small full-array zoned backlight. SmartCast OS. Sound-but-no-picture backlight failures and power board faults dominate repair calls.
Safety first
- Unplug the set and wait several minutes before opening the back: the power-supply primary capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after unplugging.
- Power-supply and LED-driver checks with the set plugged in are caution work: insulated probes, one hand, no jewelry, and never touch the primary (hot) side.
- Lay the panel face-down only on a clean, padded, flat surface; open-cell panels crack from twisting or pressure on the glass.
- Two people for 55-inch and larger sets; lift by the frame, never by the screen.
- Use ESD protection when handling the main board and T-con; the flat flex cables tear easily.
How it works
Power board (on some models with a separate LED driver board) feeds the main board and backlight strings; the main board runs SmartCast and sends video to the T-con/panel.
Backlight strings are in series; one dead LED blacks out a string. On M-Series the backlight is zoned, so failures may show as dark areas.
Some older Vizio designs join the power and LED-driver boards with a pin header; cracked solder there gives the same 'no backlight' symptom as failed strips.
