Smart TV software & connectivity (Roku TV, Google TV, Tizen, webOS, Vizio SmartCast): field manual
Covers: Smart platforms on US TVs: Roku TV (TCL, Hisense and others), Google TV / Android TV (TCL, Sony, Hisense), Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast. Menu paths change between software versions.
A large share of 'broken TV' calls are software, network or HDMI-handshake problems that need no parts. Work from least to most destructive: power-drain restart, check inputs and settings, built-in diagnostics, firmware update (network or USB), app/platform reset, and only then a full factory reset.
Safety first
- Never power off or unplug a TV during a firmware update; a cut update can leave it unbootable.
- Only load firmware for the exact model from the manufacturer's site; do not use downgrade or third-party firmware on customer sets.
- A factory reset erases apps, accounts and settings; get the customer's OK first.
- Do not use button combinations meant for a different model (TCL warns against this).
How it works
The smart platform runs on the main board. It stores settings, apps and account links in flash memory; a corrupted update or full storage causes freezes, app crashes or boot loops.
Firmware can be updated over the network or, on Samsung and LG and some other brands, from a USB drive loaded with the model's USB update file. A USB reload is the field fix when the network update fails or the set is unstable.
HDMI-CEC is a control channel over HDMI: one remote powers devices on/off, switches inputs and controls volume. Brands rename it (Samsung Anynet+, LG SimpLink, Sony BRAVIA Sync, Roku 'Control other devices (CEC)').
ARC sends TV audio back down an HDMI cable to a soundbar/receiver, limited to compressed formats; eARC (HDMI 2.1) has far more bandwidth for lossless multichannel and full Atmos. ARC relies on CEC being enabled; eARC has its own discovery link but most setups still use CEC for control. The soundbar must be on the port labeled ARC/eARC.
Wi-Fi faults split into: TV cannot join the router (password, band, signal), joins but has no internet (router/ISP/DNS), or connects but is too slow to stream. Platform error codes (see the TV error codes) tell you which.
