Scotsman Brilliance SCN60 nugget and CU50 gourmet cube undercounter: quick sheet
Covers: Scotsman residential 15-inch undercounter ice machines: SCN60 Brilliance nugget (SCN60GA gravity drain, SCN60PA with pump; -1SU panel-ready, -1SS stainless) and CU50 gourmet cube (CU50GA gravity, CU50PA pump) (Scotsman spec sheets; KaTom, BBQGuys listings).
Premium built-in ice machines common in high-end kitchens and bars. SCN60 makes nugget ice with an auger/evaporator; CU50 makes clear gourmet cubes on a water-spray/plate-type system. Both are air-cooled, 115 V, and come in gravity-drain or pump-drain versions — drain problems are a top service call.
Safety first
- Unplug before removing any cover; the start device, compressor terminals and defrost heater are line voltage.
- Sealed refrigerant system (compressor, condenser coil, evaporator tubing, capillary, refrigerant charge) is BLOCKED: diagnose symptoms only and refer to an EPA 608-certified technician. No brazing, recharging or leak repair.
- Many current units use R-600a (isobutane), a flammable refrigerant: no open flame or sparking tools near the tubing, and ventilate if a leak is suspected.
- Melt ice with a hair dryer on low or warm towels only; never chip ice off an evaporator with a tool.
- Keep food at safe temperature (move it to coolers) during any defrost or repair.
How it works
SCN60: water fills a reservoir by float/valve, an auger inside a refrigerated cylinder scrapes and compresses ice into nuggets that drop into the insulated bin; bin control stops production when full.
CU50: water is circulated over a cold evaporator to build clear cubes, then a harvest cycle releases them into the bin; leftover water drains away.
Gravity models need a floor drain below the unit (5/8 in ID drain line on SCN60); pump models (PA) lift water through a supplied drain tube.
